Local Guide

Not a list of tourist attractions. What we'd tell you if you were friends visiting: where we go, what we order, and which streets we take when no one's watching.

Recommended Walks

The Grand Tour

The Grand Tour

~50 minutes

Arena → Via Mazzini → Piazza Erbe → Arche Scaligere → Ponte Pietra

The must-do route for first-time visitors to Verona. Start from the Arena, walk through the shopping streets, emerge into the liveliest square in town, and end on the Roman bridge with the Adige beneath your feet. Do it early in the morning, before the crowds.

Romantic Verona

Romantic Verona

~35 minutes

Juliet's House → Piazza dei Signori → Lungadige → Ponte Pietra

In Shakespeare's footsteps: from Juliet's courtyard to the Scaliger palaces, then along the river to sunset. The most beautiful spot is the Lungadige around six in the evening, when the light turns golden and the Veronese come out for aperitivo.

Sunset Panorama

Sunset Panorama

~40 minutes

Ponte Pietra → Roman Theatre → Castel San Pietro → descent to Giardino Giusti

The climb to Castel San Pietro rewards every step: from up there you can see all of Verona, the red rooftops, the bell towers, the bend of the Adige. The perfect time is an hour before sunset. Bring something to drink and sit on the steps.

Gastronomy

Where to Eat

Breakfast

Pasticceria Flego
The locals come here for the cream-filled croissants. Get there early: they run out.
Caffè Coloniale
If you're looking for a real brunch, not the tourist version. Excellent pancakes and filter coffee.

Lunch

Osteria del Bugiardo
A board of local cured meats, a glass of Valpolicella, and off you go. Excellent value.
Trattoria al Pompiere
Open since 1860. The bigoli with duck ragù is the reason it still exists. Book ahead.

Aperitivo

Piazza Erbe
Ask for a spritz with Select instead of Aperol—it's the Veronese version. Sit where the locals sit, never at the first empty table.
Osteria Ai Preti
Off the tourist radar. Cicchetti at the bar, house wine, real osteria atmosphere. Near Ponte Pietra.

Dinner

Ristorante Maffei
In Piazza Erbe, with an inner courtyard that becomes magical in the evening. Refined Veronese cuisine.
Locanda 4 Cuochi
More contemporary, less formal. Seasonal dishes with local ingredients. Excellent wine list.

Useful Tips

VeronaCard

Great value: free entry to the Arena, Roman Theatre, Castelvecchio, and other museums, plus unlimited buses. Buy it right away at the tourist office in Piazza Bra. Available in 24h and 48h versions.

The Saturday Market

Every Saturday morning in Piazza San Zeno there's a market with local producers: Monte Veronese cheese, cured meats, honey, fresh bread. Worth the detour. If you're here on Thursday, there's the Piazza Vittorio Veneto market.

Spritz, done right

In Verona, aperitivo time is between 6 and 8 PM. Order a "spritz al Select" for the local version. Pair it with cicchetti, the traditional Venetian bar snacks. More than a meal, a ritual.

Forget the car

The historic center is a restricted traffic zone and compact. You can walk everywhere in half an hour. If you arrive by car, park at Parcheggio Cittadella or Arena and forget the keys until departure.
